The primary purpose of the Parent Association is "to engage in activities that promote leadership and assistance to HTMMA, to encourage member participation in school activities, to facilitate communication between the school and students and their families, and to provide fund-raising support, as well as to promote the recognition of all schools within High Tech High village in the community" (Bylaws 1).
So far this year, 2008-9, we have organized several restaurant fundraisers; a truly magical Family Fall Festival, and grade-level get-togethers for all three grades. We have hard-working team parents in place for all the classrooms. We also have provided dinner for teachers and staff on Back-to-School Night and Media Night. Jo Hendrix-Kohalvde organized an electronic waste recycling event that diverted almost two tons of e-waste from landfills and raised money for our school. We've helped stage the annual school Jog-A-Thon. We have funded the purchase of theatrical lights, art frames and a Shutterfly subscription for the school.
Jemma Samala, a 6th-grade team parent, coordinated Teacher Appreciation Week in late February. That week different grades and team provided the teachers and staff with delicious and healthy breakfasts every day, and the students brought in flowers, candy and notes of appreciation. There was also a school-wide luncheon on the Thursday of that week catered by the Italian restaurant Solare.
On the weekend of April 24-25, dozens of parents, students, teachers and staff came together for a school Spruce-Up; the crew cleaned all the classrooms, painted many walls, and assembled furniture to make the school a better place. The Parent Association funded nearly $800 worth of furniture and storage units to help unclutter and beautify the school. Thanks to Donna Staley and Lisa Ferguson who made it all happen!
One of our main campaigns at the moment is to get parents signed up for eScrip. The site is www.escrip.com, and the main contributor is Vons grocery stores. If you don't know your Vons club card number, call 1 (877) 723-3929 to find out.
